History of Skiing in Montenegro

The story of skiing in Montenegro began in 1891, when a Norwegian, Captain Henrik August Angell, arrived in our country carrying a single pair of skis. His initial mission was to learn about the people who had fought for centuries for their freedom and independence — however, his stay in Cetinje changed his intentions.

Impressed by the cultural and social life of the Montenegrin capital, and invited by Prince Nikola I Petrović, Angell decided to organize a skiing school during his next visit. In cooperation with a French professor from the French Embassy in Cetinje, the first skiing society — the Cetinje Skiing Society — was founded in 1892.

In 1893, Captain Angell returned to Montenegro, this time bringing one hundred pairs of skis, and opened the first skiing school. Among the participants were both civilians and members of the Montenegrin army. Thus, instead of producing a military report on Montenegro, Angell gifted the world a story about mountains and people learning to move across the snow. He later described these events in his book “Through Montenegro on Skis” (Gjennom Montenegro på ski), published in Kristiania (modern-day Oslo) in 1895.

This marked the beginning of skiing in Montenegro — first as a practical and military skill, and later as a sport, a tradition, and a lasting passion.

Upon these foundations, almost a century later, the Association of Snowsport Instructors and Trainers of Montenegro — MASI, today known as Montenegro INTERSKI, was established.
